TREE EQUITY FOCUS AREAS
The PVD Tree Plan establishes what we call “Tree Equity Focus Areas” to guide our ongoing work towards a healthy and resilient urban forest for all of Providence. To identify these priority areas for focused action, we zeroed in on locations throughout the city with low existing tree canopy, particularly those where health and climate impacts are most severely felt and where our most vulnerable communities live.
By the numbers:
Current canopy coverage: 16.9%
Number of residents: 105,000
Residents who are people of color: 80%
Residents who are experiencing poverty: 50%
Residents who are children or elders: 37%

See pages 44 – 45 of the PVD Tree Plan for more about the process we used to select these focus areas, which combined environmental and demographic data analysis with on-the-ground community knowledge.
